"WATCH WHAT YOU SEEK"

04/10/2025

Scripture: Luke 11:29"And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet."

There is something chilling about Jesus calling a crowd "an evil generation." It wasn't their presence that troubled Him—it was their posture. They were not gathered to follow, worship, or learn. They were there to test, to see, to demand. They sought a sign, not a Savior.

Jesus refuses to perform. Why? Because He knows the heart behind their seeking. He knows that not all seeking is spiritual. Some is selfish. And so He warns them—and us—today:

Watch what you seek, and why you're seeking it.

The Wrong Kind of Seeking

Too often, we come to God with motivations that look spiritual on the outside but are prideful at the core:

  • Control – We want to manage outcomes, not surrender to God's will.
  • Curiosity – We want to be impressed, not transformed.
  • Commanding God's Attention – We act like God owes us
  • He already gave us the cross.

Like the crowd, we can fall into the trap of asking God to prove Himself while ignoring all the ways He already has.

The Right Kind of Seeking

Jesus isn't against seeking—He invites it. He said, "Seek, and you will find." But the kind of seeking He honors is humble, open, and hungry for Him—not just His power. Here's what we should seek:

  • Clarity – We come to God for direction, asking Him to light our path.
  • Connection – We seek relationship, not just results. Like Mary at His feet, we want to be with Him.
  • Conviction – We ask God to search us, refine us, and draw us into holiness.

These are the kinds of seekers God delights in. Not those demanding signs, but those desiring Him.

PRAYER

Father, help us to watch what we seek. Purify our hearts so we don't come to You with selfish motives, demanding signs or trying to control outcomes. Teach us to seek You for the right reasons—to walk in Your clarity, to dwell in Your presence, and to grow in Your truth.

FATHER, we don't need a sign. We need a Savior. And You have already given Him, Your Son, Jesus the Christ.

Help us to stop asking for more and start trusting in what You've already done. May our seeking lead us deeper into surrender, not further into skepticism. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
